The most radical cars in my small Texas town were owned by Black Men! It was the early 70’s. A few of us - all white and 17 - would drive our hotrods to their shop or garage and bench race. They were twice our age, lived literally across the tracks, and knew racism. We didn’t. They accepted US. Not us accepting THEM. We learned how to make a car go fast. Mostly? We enjoyed their company and we always laughed our asses off with them. They are all long since dead. I have a 1963 Chevy II real deal altered wheelbase gasser. These Men’s names are on the fenders: Slim Williams, Raymond “Big Money” Cook, Jybo Thomas… RIP.

An Orange 69 Camaro “ Brooklyn heavy” car was parked for a long time at the gas station where I pumped gas back in high school, early 80’s
