It’s also not only one-upping. Another common tactic is downplaying the achievements or successes of others by ridiculing or distorting them.

Life must be one constant threat for a narcissist. A simple comment in an overheard conversation causes such an injury that the narcissist must immediately defend themselves. I’d have more empathy for narcissists, but I often feel the need to shut empathy down with them because they can be so aggressive and cause so much pain. Thanks Dr. Grande.

I just recently came across a creepy narcissist's. And your right they literally CANT stop lying. It makes no sense to me, I have no problems being honest and admitting my foolish actions. Everyone does dumb stuff from time to time, your good friends help you to avoid doing thoes dumb things, thats why its good to honest friends around you, the ones that well tell ya straight out, when ya being a fool.

Old dude across the street claims he's the grandson of the Queen of Denmark and has diplomatic immunity. Claims he wins hundreds of dollars on scratch off tickets but doesn't go anywhere except to the Casino. His daughter is the head Pharmacist at a local hospital. He'd talk my ear off and have nothing to say. She literally puts her nose in the air and never says Hi. I just avoid the both of them.

My ex had a brother-in-law who did this type of thing and his explanations were generally ridiculous. We mentioned we were going to a midnight showing on opening day for a movie we had been excited about. He always had to be better, so told us he had already seen the movie the month before because he lived in Atlanta, which is a hub, meaning they get movies way in advance of the rest of the nation. He didn’t want to tell us anything about it, though, because they tried not to ruin the movies for everyone else by talking about them, which is why it wasn’t common knowledge that they got them so early down there.

This reminds me of one of my neighbors, a woman 😆 She is always trying to outdo and one up people's stories, even to the point of lying and completely making them up. Through the years I have become something of a lie detector, and she lies all...the...time. She has a tell when she's making up a story or lying about something. She gets real loud when she tells it and often times is laughing. Like that's the part she wants to highlight and impress you with, and I think she thinks by being loud when she tells it, that she is selling it and others are buying it. Not everybody who does this is lying, it's just her tell.

My ex was like that but he's a sociopath. He once was following a woman he was acquainted with on IG and she ran a marathon. He ran track in high school but that was over 15 yrs ago and he had the nerve to message her and tell her that he ran marathons around the world and his favorite one was in France yet he never left the U.S. and never had a passport in his life.

This sounds exactly like my sister. Npd. It was sad when she died. She would wander for hours. No one wanted to help her because she was an alcoholic also. I felt really bad for her because she needed help not judgement.

This is on point 😂 I had a professional experience w/ a grandiose narcissist counselor in this kind of setting, and when the ‘resume statements’ started to roll, it became childish and comical. Was all I could do to NOT say outside of my head ‘ Oh great here comes the David Copperfield novel “I’ll begin at the beginning when I was born’ hahah

This so hits the mark! My ex-husband did this all the time and I used to scratch my head and wonder what the mechanism was behind his delusion.

Right on point, this reminds me of my ex husband. He claimed he was a self employed/business owner. In all actuality he was a low baller on Craigslist.

Man, this reminds me of water cooler talk. Like, one guy feels the need to one up another's story. Even if the story he's telling is true, he brings it up as a means of an ego flex.
