The sling, i stead of twirled overhead, is often mounted to a staff, giving further leverage, much like the flexible sling/basket at the end if a trebuchet, the staff acting as the throwing arm if the trebuchet, with the force beung provided by human muscle instead of gravity acting on the weight of the trebuchet.
You can find videos here on youtube, search for staff sling.

And, if you are a skilled slinger in modern times, I'd bet that the sling could be modified to hold modern hand grenades and arm them shortly after release using another string with a carabiner on the free end and slightly longer than the thrower's height so that the pin pulling string is too long to pull the pin if the grenade falls out of the pouch while in rest.🤔

It was very common for slingers in ancient times to write little messages on their bullets. Things like "Catch!" or "Watch your head!" The best slingers were widely known to come from either the greek city-state of Rhodes or from the Baeleric Islands off the eastern coast of Iberia. Mercenaries from these two regions were worth their weight in gold.
