Thank you for this, I’ve had neighbors with outside cats, and while I love them it was mortifying to see the amount of birds they kill every season. Tried to save a few to no avail. Be mindful of your little babes and their instincts, they may be cute but they do have a psychopathic streak for small animals lol. They can’t help it but you can.

This is a massive issue here in Australia, even more so than the famous pests that people know about. Cats and Foxes unfortunately get "pretty privilege" and tonnes of uneducated people still defend their right to roam free without realising how many millions of native marsupials they actually kill.

I live near a food market, my cats (and their dog dad) bring home at least a rat a week, and they get paid in gourmet wet food.
This has focused them to go after rodents and they will ignore other prey.
During ongoing heavy rains one bedraggled cat brought in a live frog and was so pleased, looking at the reward shelf. When he found out frogs were not on the list he gave the frog a filthy look but let it hop away.
Since then he's ignored the rare frog we get round here.
And during Covid they stopped a rat plague, bringing in multiple rats a day.... they had a lot of rewards.
If it wasn't for them being indoor/outdoor cats the place would have been overun along with nearby houses - the rats pre-cats were chewing wiring.
So it's a matter of training cats with a reward system... and them being raised by a dog that really hates rats and taught them to hunt as a team.
Garbage night I let the dog out so the team can check the neighbourhood bins for opportune rats,... or I will get in trouble with the dog.
Cats can be working animals if raised correctly.

My cat is a machine.
She never leaves my backyard, because we have very high walls she can't climb, but she still manages to kill birds that pass from one neighbor tree to another, which is kind of impressive, because it's rare for a bird to land on my house, so that only means that despite not having many opportunities to kill a bird she never misses one when she gets it.
If i would let her out, that would be a huge problem.

There are so many great cats out there that are just abandoned by owners. We adopted a street cat and he’s the best cat I’ve ever had, super affectionate and sweet. Please adopt!
