For anyone with an outdoor compost who's a bit .. uh.. slow in its upkeep (i.e. doesn't do any turning and just throws produce in a pile lol) have a look there! In future you can throw all your old tomatoes and the remnants from making sauce in a particular spot and keep an eye on them in Spring. We had so many one year after dumping our sauce discards - I was surprised but even mild cooking didn't affect their germination!

I have some volunteer seedlings coming up from some new (to me) cherry tomatoes that I grew last year. Volunteers coming up for the same reason as yours! I think I want to find a spot for them, maybe in one of my huge pots. I grew some in one last year and they did great. I also have arugula-some that the root overwintered, and some that reseeded itself. My fennel and parsley did the same thing. I love free plants!

I had TONS of volunteer sprouts this year! You’re not kidding when you say you can have hundreds. It is literally the lazy persons starts.
You just have to know what varieties you had where, if you’re thinking of selling them, unless you only grow one variety. Or else do like you suggested and save one tomato to throw in a designated area and label it for each different variety.
