When I put tomatoes in the compost bin I remove the seeds so they won't do that. But I still get volunteers. I'm a sucker for a volunteer plant, I can't pull it up 😊😊😊

For anyone with an outdoor compost who's a bit .. uh.. slow in its upkeep (i.e. doesn't do any turning and just throws produce in a pile lol) have a look there! In future you can throw all your old tomatoes and the remnants from making sauce in a particular spot and keep an eye on them in Spring. We had so many one year after dumping our sauce discards - I was surprised but even mild cooking didn't affect their germination!

I have some volunteer seedlings coming up from some new (to me) cherry tomatoes that I grew last year. Volunteers coming up for the same reason as yours! I think I want to find a spot for them, maybe in one of my huge pots. I grew some in one last year and they did great. I also have arugula-some that the root overwintered, and some that reseeded itself. My fennel and parsley did the same thing. I love free plants!

Similar to the Amish way. They slice the tomato and lightly cover with dirt. Put it in a cool dark place over the winter. Pull it out when the time is right and bam! I learned that from Doug and Stacey.

Had accidental hybrids. One was better than the originals. The other never turned red and tasted awful. I keep tomatoes I want to save seed separated and other things. Side of the garage is my seed saving spot.

Cool. We winter sowed in milkjugs from March-present and our plants are about 8 inches high. Yay! Easier than dragging them in and out each day. Opened them when night time temps were in upper 50s and above and never had to bring them in. So much easier.

I had TONS of volunteer sprouts this year! You’re not kidding when you say you can have hundreds. It is literally the lazy persons starts. You just have to know what varieties you had where, if you’re thinking of selling them, unless you only grow one variety. Or else do like you suggested and save one tomato to throw in a designated area and label it for each different variety.

Yes but here in MI they’re that size in late may early June. That means it’ll take forever for it to grow. Our summer is not long for that size of tomatoes plant.

I accidentally got a medley of plants from a medley of tomatoes last year. Threw some rotten ones in the garden and had hundreds of seedlings by march.

I tried that. Someone knew that's what they were & called me out saying the plants wouldn't produce.

I let some tomatoes fall to the ground last fall hoping for volunteers, but maybe the gel kept them from starting because there is nothing this spring. Same for my ground cherries. So disappointing.

I actually think I discovered eggplant volunteers the other day! I'm waiting for some true leaves to come in to be sure.

Or feed older tomatoes to your chickens and turkeys and see where the pooped out tomato seeds sprout! 🌱

Which 2-3 cherry tomato’s taste the best. And where to buy the seeds for next year? ☺️I heard there are over 1000 varieties. How about strawberries too? I’m PNW zone 8b to 9a (full hot sun garden).
