April 24th, 1967 - The Doors release their hit single, “Light My Fire.”

At the time, the band needed another single, and Los Angeles DJ Dave Diamond had been telling the group that “Light My Fire” was a hit and needed to be released. The original cut was seven minutes long but needed to be three if it was a single, so Paul Rothchild headed into the studio and came out with an edit three days later. The track hit #1 in the charts by the third week of July 1967.

With an intoxicating, genre-blending sound, provocative and uncompromising songs, and the mesmerizing power of singer Jim Morrison’s poetry and presence, The Doors had a transformative impact not only on popular music but on popular culture.

The Doors’ arrival on the rock scene in 1967 marked not only the start of a string of hit singles and albums that would become classics, but also of something much bigger – a new and deeper relationship between creators and audience. Refusing to be mere entertainers, the Los Angeles quartet relentlessly challenged, confronted and inspired their fans, leaping headfirst into the heart of darkness while other bands warbled about peace and love. History was made that day. "Light My Fire" was such a huge hit, Jose Feliciano's cover of it in 1968 was a hit also. I'll never get tired of listening to either version. They're timeless!

I remember it well, I was 6 years old and it (short version) was being played on every AM station that played music.

The album came out in January 67 months before the 45. They were promoting Break on Through which didn't chart as high. What a great time in history to be young. What I remember!
