I’d differentiate between discomfort and pain. I’ve trained for 35 years with decent results. You have to push into the discomfort- if it’s not uncomfortable it probably won’t work, at least after the first 6-12 months of training (when almost anything will work). Personally though I try to avoid pain in a literal sense (partly cos I’m older). The main reason is that consistent training, over months and years, is what will bring gains. If you’re injured you can’t train and the gains will be interrupted and, in my opinion, real pain is a leading indicator of injury. Others can disagree but this mantra about pain I personally think is a bit unhelpful and borderline dangerous.
