it's amazing what you can do under enough stress

PROTIP (based on personal experience): when your therapist recommends that you manage your stress better, sending them a picture of you pulling off this matchstick trick in your kitchen is not quite what they had in mind.

Polybridge players have an advantage here

The critical component here is that the string carrying the weight is actually against the edge of the counter. He doesn’t point that out while he is describing the rest of the setup.

Not a great explanation given you dont cover the centre of gravity being core to the solution.

I think it's cool that these authors have no idea how this trick works. They just use those other matches to push the center of gravity of the hanging weight backwards under the table enough that it doesn't try to pull the match over. You can do the same trip by putting two forks on there

This is insane I feel like part of it has to do with friction if it was a slippery surface I feel it would not be stable like this

as a professional player of those bridge making games, I can confirm that triangles are stable

So now you can build the Golden Gate Bridge using matchsticks and support marble jar cars

The match between strings is pushed below the edge of the table, and so the center of mass of the jar gets below the table and the all thing becomes stable.

the one holding the strings apart isn't a match...

I think they filmed this from space in zero gravity.
