I don’t ever put my bag on the back of the chair like that even when I’m not traveling. That’s insane. They sell purse hooks that attach to the table.

I put mine between my knees in such a way as it being moved can't be missed and also my leg through a strap.
With my camera, I'll take it off my body to rest it on a table and it goes into the bag. Or I always keep the strap attached to me. Not just over your neck which is easy to get past but wrapped round my arm a couple of times.
Amazes me how many people just dump their stuff and don't keep track of it.
If it's a touristy busy place or sketchy, I might avoid sitting anywhere where I can't have my back to a wall or window and see people coming.

I put large bags etc around the chair legs but cards,cash and phone etc stay in my wrap around bag on me.

If I have a bag I just put it between my feet on the floor. Sure it’ll get dirty but you just need to get a durable bag. Otherwise you’re gonna be stressing on where to put it when the ground is usually the safest option
