Yep. Mine has to have a special invitation for everything. I’ll let him out (I sneak back in) and leave the screen door open. Two minutes later “woof woof”. I shout over - it’s open, you can come in. Nope. This can go on for 10- minutes. Finally I get up and walk over, step outside and say please sir, come in - in he toddles. We have this play out all over the house for every circumstance. Going to bed, getting up. Going to the car. Dinner time. His nickname in our family is “special invite”.

My Collie does this, too! I think she does it because she is scared I will “forget her” and make her stay outside for a long time. She is an old girl and enjoys naps on her bed and being inside with her people - long gone are extended hours outside. Bless!! They just want us to get some exercise and stay with us!

Jirha has it right, dogs expect their pack to protect them when they are vulnerable and distracted by urgent natural needs. They watch your back all day, they would like the return of courtesy :) At least, that's what my dog says ..
