I think what happened is that the GOP noticed how fear and hate always energized their base to get out and vote. So, figured why not just make our entire platform nothing but fear and hate?
That only gets you so far though. It works great on the sheep that can be led around with fear and hate but you lose a lot of the people who actually care about the country and can think for themselves.
