As a former O'Reilly employee I can tell you 2 things.
1. The employee who returned the parts without looking in the boxes is 100% responsible for the used/destroyed parts going back out to another customer.
2. The bearing boxes have the part number RP1561 on them. The "RP" means it's a repair bearing. It wasn't a scumbag, the parts store sold you the wrong part.

You know what's incredibly unclassy? The fact I don't think I've ever sold a customer a part when I worked at the parts store without opening the box to verify. Unless of course it's an obvious packaged box like a light bulb or wipers. This is to blame completely on the parts store.
This goes for checking return parts, which is policy in most places.

I was on a job and we had to install a 70" TV in a conference room. It was shipped from Best Buy on a pallet. We cut the straps and loaded in to my van. On site I cut the box open to grab the manual to find where the VESA screw holes to get the proper measurement for the mount. I'm like something doesn't seem right, I was expecting the top of the TV to be near the top of the box. We cut the bands off and pull the box off and are greeted with a old 48" TV with a couple giant landscape rock tucked in. I immediately take photos and call Best Buy business customer service. The guy actually said "How do I know you didn't swap the TVs". Dude, why would I call you? I would just send it back. So, still needing a TV the project manager orders one on will call locally. When we picked it up I told the clerk helping us and he says it happens all the time. That made me madder at the guy that accused me of doing it.

Parts guy here... When the AutoZone first opened up I started getting returns galor. I'd open up the box and yes, the parts were new but because I recognized the parts number, I realized it was boxed wrong. Innocent me, I later realized the 'Zone guys didn't know how to look up parts and the customers were coming to me second, getting the correct part and later, reboxing the 'Zone part in my box and returning it to me. I started marking parts in front of the customer and that kwap stopped cold. I had a few customers question my marking and I knew I had thwarted their plan.

Donāt twist my words and get super offendedā¦.not all DIYers are scumbags. Thieves are scumbags. DIYers do this more than businesses. Businesses that do this are also scumbags.
