I have the opposite problem… when I read I can see everything as if I’m hovering next to the characters so when I get to those scenes it’s comparable to being in the same room as two people becoming intimate. A lot of times I have to physically put down the book just to extricate myself from the situation as if it were real

I’m writing a story for a school project and I wanted to make two of the characters fall in love because all good stories have a love trope, but what I didn’t realize is that it’s EXTREMELY weird to write a love scene. I’m just sitting awkwardly in front of my computer trying to write about two characters falling in love

My guess for why some people struggle to read spicy scenes is they still harbor a bit of "sex is icky/taboo" from growing up religious/with parents who were uncomfortable with the topic. Emotionally intense scenes like death or breakups probably face the same level of scrutiny in the editing process, but we allow ourselves to get swept up it because it doesn't carry the same level of shame.

The trick is to read a spicy story about an author and their editor.
