Carbon fiber is extremely strong when you try to pull it apart, but when you apply crushing forces to it, it's not so strong. Also, the body of the sub was wrapped linearly (wrapped around the cylinder, as you would wrap a spool of twine), but not longitudinally. Why was it not made entirely of titanium? Proven thousands of times to be safe at depths over 5,000 meters. It was a money saving decision, not a safety driven decision.
