For a lot of middle class people, it's about the money. One of my friends used to have over my fiancee and I every other weekend, and he would grill steaks, do crawfish boils, etc etc. At first we would bring food, and then we realized his wife cooked better than us and made way more than enough food. Then I switched to bringing beer, and I realized he didn't really drink much during the week, because my cases were just filling his garage fridge. So I just started bring cash. He tried not taking it, but then I started putting it in his wife's purse.. eventually I just started putting it in his spice cabinet.
Like ya'll, you're spending tons of money, and countless hours shopping, prepping food, skillfully cooking, and then cleaning up dishes and knives and stuff... whereas we would've uber'd food. I'm fine contributing in the way that makes the most sense without feeling like I've become a literal monthly bill in your household, when really YOU'RE ENOUGH... so we contribute to the entertainment monetarily.

Honestly, whenever I or others bring something it barely gets touched because EVERYONE is bringing stuff. If it's understood that everyone is bringing something unique then that's different. But 20 bottles of cheap wine is too much.
