It seems to be my regular duty to remind people of this: You can hug a lucario! In the movie that introduced them, "Lucario and The Mystery of Mew", Lady Whats-her-name does so. At the end of the scene of him running around the castle and flipping out at how much it's changed, she tells him he'll always have a home, there, and does the smart thing. She takes ahold of his shoulders, turns him a little so that the spike it's pointed at her directly, and hugs. The side of the spike is all that touches her. One second of precautionary turning is all you need.

Ive always been fond of the workaround that they put a tennis ball over the spike so its just uncomfortable rather than a death by Snuggles scenario. That or just yeah, side hug. Like a sane person
