Honest Q: If a soldier tries to compartmentalize the intensities and stresses and horrors of war as a "Just for right now" kind of thing so he won't bring it home with him, if he tries to make it abstract like that, does he risk unplugging himself from the reality of it so much as to endanger himself and his unit? If he says this is just a temporary obstacle I need to get through, just a speed bump, is that failing to take the active threats seriously enough? It may sound hella obvious. Just trying to get inside the heads and thought processes of men who serbed in the really nasty jobs. Thank all of you who sacrificed and continue to sacrifice so much for the rest of us.
