This happened in Delaware I always thought it was a fake story .. I was told this as a cautionary story to not pick up hitchhikers.. it's scarier imo when it's in your own state , especially when your state is ° big

I heard this story years ago, soon after it happened. At the time, cops suspected the son of killing his mother, then concocting the story of a dangerous hitch hiker to throw them off. She had a sizeable insurance policy (cue Mike from That Chapter!) and her son was sole beneficiary.

I passed by a dude flagging me down around 2am and there was no one for miles

This isn't completely accurate. Charles stopped at a fast food restaurant on his way home and encountered the hitchhiker. This is a major detail. The police suspected Charles killed his mother and made up the story. Employees at the restaurant corroborated Charles's story of the hitchhiker. If it hadn't been for them, Charles would probably have been prosecuted for the murder.

Fifty years ago while a teen, I picked up an Alaska Native woman in Alaska - feeling sorry for her as it was very cold outside. BIG MISTAKE! She was drunk as ever and when I stopped to let her out at her destination, she demanded I wait for her while she went into a bar. NEVER PICK UP HITCHHIKERS! What a bizarre story this one is though. But anything is possible in this world. I remember reading 'In Cold Blood' by Truman Capote in the murder of a farm family and that was shocking enough at the time.
