That's really aweful. I pray this guy gets everything cleaned up without real damage. I've noticed a lot of people in the Caribbean do the inside of their homes like a tile shower pan. The homes are concrete block and the inside tile often goes up the wall a foot or two and everything is sealed. The homes are also built up above the ground a foot or 2 or 3... I've witness them flood really bad in a hurricane and the water washes right out as the floors are all made like a shower pan and drain out the doors. It is pretty interesting to witness. They do not use furniture made from woods or materials that would be negatively affected by water submersion and often do not have floor cabinets, just wall cabinets with a countertop on shelving brackets... Everything seems to be designed around this... They have come close to perfecting it and do it with very little money. It is interesting that the US building codes that are written by thousands of the nation's top architects and engineers cannot figure this kind of solution out and in fact would regulate you from building this way in almost every jurisdiction of the US.
