That is definitely upsetting and disheartening to hear (to say the least), but I think it would be unwise to link such negative experiences with the idea or belief in God Almighty as an inherent concept or explanation of the universe as a whole. Yes, certain religions or “cults” as you may like to call them, may certainly be extreme or have strange and seemingly immoral behavior practiced by their followers; but that should not instantly discredit an entire worldview or way of life, let alone the independent reality of a Transcendent & Supreme Creator and Sustainer of our world (which I would argue is logically rational and best explains our world, with signs & evidence pointing towards it all around us throughout nature). Therefore I believe we must learn to distinguish between the two, and not let religion or cultural practice take the place of God. That would be like disliking a certain TV show, and in turn arguing that the very concept of television and all TV content that exists must be equally terrible, and thus abandoned as absurd and immoral, and ought be wiped out clean from society (that’s how I felt about The Office, but the way). Point being, such a leap is clearly unwarranted, which in principle also applies towards faith & God. And I think more people ought to be aware of that. As for Islam (the way of life I personally follow, which means “complete submission & devotion to God, in order to achieve peace”)—there we have no such concept in mediators, intercessors, or “confessing your sins” to an Imām or any other such religious leader. Everyone is equal, and what you do is between YOU and God—no one else. That is why the Qur’an itself says: ”Your Lord is sufficient as the sole Knower and Beholder of His servants’ sins.” (Qur’an 17:17) And ”Leave Me to be with the one whom I created alone!” (Qur’an 74:11) Therefore no one else needs to know about our private life or misdeeds. We have God our Creator to talk to directly, and He is always willing to turn back to us and forgive our wrongdoings if we are truly sincere and making things right and turning back to Him. So all praise & thanks be to God, the Lord of all the worlds. The Knower of the past, present, and future—the One to whom we shall all return.
