He was deflecting. It was a view he started using re an appearance on Kenobi. He was asked just after the final episode he appears in and he said for the right project he would.

Star Wars was fun back in the 1970s and '80s, when it was fresh and new. The Prequels had some semblance of a plot, but were basically an excuse for George to throw in every form of computer special effects that he could, in every single scene, and they were poorly written. And then he sold the entire franchise to Disney and everything went straight down the crapper.

No, it's the overall bad (one might say shitty) ideas and writing that is damaging Star Wars. Not all of it has been terrible, but the writing for the sequel trilogy, for BoBF, and Obi-Wan Kenobi was mostly awful. Trying to sprinkle in a little of Star Wars to mask the mostly fecal matter that is the writing is just not working.
