I imagine it also has a lot to do with what kind of stress you're experiencing. Stress about finishing a major project can be motivating, and the payoff is great. Stress about how to pay for rent AND food is very different. It also might have something to do with whether the stress is situational and time-restricted (like meeting a deadline) vs. constant (like never having enough money).

A visiting teacher taught me about 30 years ago that there is a difference between stress and distress. Stress is a good and motivating, that’s not bad! Distress is when that tips over and THAT is what is actually problematic.

Preach that. The only thing that worries me is that it can be used a good argument to lock you into doing things you don’t like. You need to choose the kind of stress you want.

It seems like the mindset may not be a causation thing but rather correlation. What is it that allows those people to view stress positively? Support systems, good childhood, resources that allows them to feel confident? Because it may be that other factors are what facilitate positive emotions.

I think a major issue is also what type of stress. Stress at work, helping the family, stuff like that is good. Financial stress and wondering how you are going to pay your bills or afford your meds this month, not good. I’m not sure if these studies looked into that

Have stress to live a longer stressful life. Yup that makes sense.

I agree with dr Mike, stress is needed and labelling it as a negative isn't healthy. Use it to push yourself and take breaks when needed.

Though this is a highly controversial study where people are still questioning the legitimacy because some people just have no choice but to suck up and shut up about the abuse they suffer. Those people will see stress as negative. People who view it positively might just be talking about a DIFFERENT type of stress. The stress of going for a promotion, of buying a house, of trying something new. I would say that people who live under the boots of abuse live less and those who challenge themselves without being abused live longer. Not to undermine the power of reframing your views but when you tell a person being abused to just think positively about the abuse, I have a hard time believing it will make them live longer.

I feel like those “growth mindset” people also tend to make more money and have better access to healthcare.

I was getting nervous when Dr. Mike talked about people with higher levels of stress live shorter lives. I just thought, “I have high levels of stress but I need it to drive me forward because I am bad at time management and my anxiety helps cancel it out.” So it was a big relief hearing the rest of what he had to say😅

There is daily ‘everyone can experience’ stress and then there are anxiety disorders where your mind will stress about everything or nothing or anything. That stress is so exhausting and overwhelming that anyone living with it (and who hasn’t found a solution for it) does not want to live long anyways. 😢

Today I learned some people see stress positively. Gonna have to reflect on that.

Guessing it's not the mindset itself though, but what that brings with it - hormones released from exercising, healthier heart from running etc
