Great reminders! I know someone who put her house keys in her checked bag and when she got home, the bag was lost. Scary not to mention inconvenient.

This reminds me of when a perso who works in the bank that I use told me that some customers have put their spare safety deposit key INSIDE the box. We try t think for others, but they also have to think for themselves. If someone says "hey, give me the things you weren't going to pack and I'll go put them where all the checked bags go", STOP and put your meds, etc. with your carry-on bag or your pockets if necessary.

My Mum's old suitcase went missing in Italy a while back. Luckily she got reunited with it 4 days into our 7-day holiday but it smelt funny and was dirty. We had to spend the 4 days buying emergency clothes as all she had for clothes at the time were what she stood up in. We think her suitcase didn't leave Manchester at first but when she was reunited with it a luggage label on it said the code for Rome's airport (instead of Lamezia Terme where it was meant to go).
Now she splits our clothes between suitcases

The other thing to add to your hand luggage is a spare set of underwear. I found this to my cost when the luggage tag came off when I changed at Singapore airport, on my way from London to Jakarta. I turned up in Indonesia with just a backpack full of books and no clothes. Had to go shopping the next day, as it took 3 days for my luggage to be found and sent on.

I always bring medication in my personal item. Never have to check that.

I allways bring enough medicines for double the days I travel. Half in the suitcase and half with me. My carry-on bag can also get lost and I don't want to loose time looking for new medication!

I always keep my medications, my valuables plus cash, my phones and at least one day’s of clothing and underwear as my purse that goes under the seat in front of me. I have also worn a TRAVEL VEST with all kinds and sizes of pockets(a couple big enough for my iPad to fit) and that way I do not have to worry about checking my valuables. The only danger is when I put it in the bins so I watch it very closely.

If there isn't room for your medication in your hand luggage an acceptable 2nd best option is lodging it up your prison suitcase.
