With Greek and Roman myths, there are so many different stories for just one myth. They loved to believe that all of the stories were true, and never bothered agreeing on one single version. A lot of Ancient writers have personally admitted that, and sometimes they will tell multiple versions while recording myths: I’ve seen Livy do that frequently in his History of Rome (history in quotations though). *

Considering the original myth, this is actually an incredible depiction. She WAS beautiful, so beautiful that Poseidon couldn't help but sleep with her (we would now see what he did as SA) and so Athena punished Medusa, as she had long been jealous of her beauty
