It took CGI a good 10 years before it got to the levels of fluidity and expressiveness that hand-drawn animation has always had.
Some films like tried to use CGI to mimic another form of animation, a great example being Flushed Away, and to very excellent results, that film doesn't get nearly enough credit for the way it mimics claymation with CGI and does a really good job at doing it, but it was really Tangled and then to a greater effect The Lego Movie that really kicked the CGI industry in the nads and said "USE YOUR IMAGINATION".
Tangled is the first CGI film I can remember watching that actually felt like a traditionally animated film in terms of character movement, facial expressions, and overall atmosphere, and The Lego Movie was the first CGI film to have me completely fooled until the very end, I genuinely thought the entire film was made by hand using actual pieces of Lego and CGI for the faces, I cannot stress enough how phenomenal of a job the animators did.
The Spider-Verse series also deserves a gigantic shout-out for thinking outside the box with CGI, although I feel like it's success is partially due to how well The Lego Movie turned out, hence why I give it a little more credit.
After all, both films are pretty much products of the same exact creative teams.
