I’m a licensed vet tech, dogs are omnivores just like humans, they can absolutely eat certain fruits and vegetables, they may experience some adverse effects from not eating meat, but they can get their protein from other sources just like human vegans. If they had no choice but to survive off of fruits and vegetables, they honestly could prob do it with some supplementation, plant protein is actually way better than animal protein overall, it’s absorbed faster and better, and I’ve seen stray dogs literally eat paper and other garbage out of dumpsters and they survived off of that, so it’s not impossible. Cats are true carnivores, so this would never work with cats, but dogs really do stand a chance being vegan. Ppl feed their dogs raw diets thinking that dogs are true carnivores and they need all that stuff, when in actuality most raw diets arent that great for your pets, most raw diets need to be supplemented because they do not contain everything that your dog needs (like a well balanced kibble would), ppl fail to supplement their raw diets and it leaves their pets deficient in multiple vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, so most raw diets are pointless without supplementation, you have to do a lot of research and do it correctly if you choose to feed raw, and it’s honestly not necessary at all. Yes, your dogs ancestors are wolves and foxes, who are tech true carnivores, but dogs tech domesticated themselves, humans didn’t do that, it started with hungry dogs approaching villagers for food, and through human interaction and being fed by humans, dogs became domesticated, so at this point your dog is FAR from being a wolf or a fox, and they’re no longer true carnivores, their bodies have adapted away from being a true carnivore over time. And yes, your dogs digestive tract is similar to humans, the only diff is your dogs stomach is more acidic, and the food stays in their stomach longer, most likely why they can get away with eating garbage as a stray and still survive. Dogs eat grass on their own right out of your backyard lol

Humans and dogs are both omnivores. Not eating meat is not the most logical thing to do for us, not for dogs either. Saying "my dogs are vegans" is technically a lie, I believe the honest answer would've been "I decided to feed them just vegetables", or, if you prefer "I force them to be vegan".

I remember watching a documentary about vegans, and there was this woman who forced a vegan diet upon her dog, saying it preferred it. They put her, and the dog, to the test by putting a bowl of the dog's "favorite vegan food" a bit from a bowl of standard dogfood.
The dog went to the vegan bowl, while the woman yelled a victorious "seeee?!". It sniffed at the bowl, then went to the other one and didn't even take a sniff at it before starting to gobble down.
They even took a blood test on the dog, and while it had survived on vegetables and stuff, it was very low on some other things.
She had promised to continue with whatever the dog chose, and after a checkup a month later, the dog was great, the woman felt ashamed still, but was so happy that someone talked her out of her idea.
On a side note; I think it's great that some people are vegans or vegetarians, but dogs aren't meant to only eat that.
Our dogs loves carrots, boiled broccoli (don't give them raw broccoli!), peas and a whole range of other vegetables, but only as a side snack or to make them feel full after dinner, without them getting fat from too much food. Instead of bones to chew on, a carrot each, will give them that extra to do before taking another nap, saving the chewing bones for later in the week.

I've been vegan since 2016, and i would never force my cats and dogs to be vegan.
