As the grandson of a Persian Sufi master, Farid Sheek wants to bring cultures and faiths closer together through music. “The main aim of my compositions is to combine the beauty of Western and Eastern music. During this concert, the world is experienced as one”, says Farid Sheek.

Persian music. Farid Sheek plays the percussion instrument daf, which gives Sufi music its typical cadence. Danial Moazeni from Vienna plays the stringed instrument tar and Mahan Mirarab plays fretless guitar. Rasha Vrede gives the concert an extra dimension with her Sufi dance.
In part two, western musician Maya Fridman on cello joins in. The four musicians and the dancer bring a mixture of different cultures. Most of the music that is performed is based on improvisation.

Stories between black and white
Farid Sheek (1994, Isfahan) is not only a virtuoso musician, but also a composer and teacher. With the daf, Iran's famous old percussion instrument, he creates contemporary sounds that match the endlessly rich Persian tradition. Through his music, Farid impresses with stories that are bigger than words and that bring together the past and the present, the East and the West. Sheek explains: “With my compositions, piano playing and percussion on daf. I tell the stories between white and black. Between Iran, where I come from, and the Netherlands, where I now live. I combine my Iranian background with the Western influences that I have found in the Netherlands since 2011. My father, who obtained an MA in music in Iran, taught me the love for music.”
Sheek plays and composes for the Parso Quartet and cellist Maya Fridman, among others. He also composed the music for George Tobal's theater production Children of Aleppo.
