Remember that there's no undo button for surgery. If a surgery doesn't work (and there's research to show it doesn't), you're left with the same pain OR WORSE because of all the trauma you subjected your body to.
If you "gamble" on exercise, in the worst case scenario you don't find the right combination of exercises for your body and you just delayed the surgery a little bit.
If you bet on the surgery, you're exposing yourself to all kinds of downside risks from surgery itself, and the 30 year track record of the surgery is poor to say the least.
