Absolutely get rid of the guilt of getting rid of family heirlooms if they just bring you down.

Yes. My houses always feel depressing. However after spending a ton of $ on renovations and redecorating, I realized it was my husband that had to go, not the furniture.

Number one way to remove a depressive feeling from a home - light, light, light! Most depressed people live in dark, unlit spaces.

Fresh air, sunlight and flowers are pretty much free and will definitely make the space more positive.

May I add that a home without at least a few books is depressing? I have also notice that a lot of vlogs with parents and their babies show very nice spacious homes with absolutely no artwork on the walls. Not only is a home less depressing with books and art, children need to see these things in their home.

Also, add color! Living in a space with nothing but neutrals (especially cool tone neutrals like gray) can really drag you down.

FR I’m not a natural plant person and started with just 1 and am now up to 5 and they have MASSIVELY improved my mental health. They make the space look so much better and are the first thing I look at when I get home from work. Theyre so easy to take care of, just get 1 plant and see how it goes.

Good lighting also helps. Not the bright white, gas station type of lighting…but a nice soft white with a warm glow throughout the home.

As someone who struggles with my mental health, I have mastered turning my home into my happy place and can tell you it makes all the difference for me. My presentation to the world is very beige, withdrawn, stoic, I blend in the background and observe with resting bitch face. In my home I have color everywhere, funky art that maybe only I love, a collection of thrifting treasures that speak to me, an eclectic style, maximalist yet uncluttered. I feel happy with everything I see and it helps me. That and I live in my silky robes while listening to Mac Miller, my home is truly my happy place.

Making your bed is like "make your future self feel welcome and valued" to me. To feel cared. ❤

It's depressing because it's been painted GRAY by the previous owner. Every room I paint pale violet or yellow makes me less depressed.

I turn down our bed. We lose over a pint of perspiration every night which is transferred into your bed linens! It's not pretty but it's far healthier. I do make up our bed if we're having guests but if you drop in you'll see it turned down. My home is full of natural light. Opening the curtains or shades to let the light in and adding mirrors is mood lifting.

I used to never make my bed but when I went back to work after being off during the lockdowns I started making my bed. Now I hate hate leaving the house or coming into bedroom without my bed being made. It just feels so good.

Absolutely on making the bed daily! I never used to make my bed in the morning, but since my new home has the master bedroom on the first floor right off the family room, I can see into my bedroom (I leave the door open for circulation and for my cats). Having my bed made looks so organized and I just love walking in there and it’s neat and welcoming. Total game changer.

At a minimum, tidiness is a big one, and keeping things tidy essentially comes down to finding a home for every single one of your things. When you know where something goes, it's much easier to put it back when you're done with it instead of leaving it laying out somewhere. And if you don't have a place for something, that can open the conversation of whether you still need it in the first place. You may realize you do which will get you rethinking about how your home is organized or it may make it easier for you to let it go and find a new home with somebody else.

Wow I was sure you were going to say stop living in a GREY house! 😂 I bought my home 2 years ago and everything including flooring, walls and cabinets are grey. When I’m ready to make a color commitment I will find decor items that will add some life to the interior space

Thank you for your tips, Nick. Useful as ever :) I also have an idea for more ease of mind: get rid of everything, you got from someone who is not your friend or even worse. I did that and it helped enormously - even one of those things was worth a lot of money. Peace in my soul has greater value, I think. Grtzz, Marion

Went to visit friends a few days ago and noticed how homey it had suddenly become. Friend said, yes, it's the plants! That was it - they got plants! They already had the custom architecture, high end furniture, artwork, a dog, etc., and they are always tidy, but with all that, some happy little plants made the house much more pleasant.
