We def live in a much less optimistic time now. I was a toddler in the 70s, but I remember the optimism of the 80s, and even 90s. After the Berlin Wall came down, or the fall of the USSR. Even the music was optimistic. I blame the materialism of post millennium and it seems like 90s rap culture was the main force driving that change.

What I remember was that words like ‘socialism! were verboten and anyone who talked about things like solidarity were liable to surveillance entrapment and worse. What I see today is a generation who’s not scared to talk about economic justice and for whom the word “capitalism“ as something other than the natural environment has re-entered the vocabulary. There’s every reason to hope, but also every reason to expect the next generations can expect to be locked in a fight to the death with the agents of “capitalist realism”, that is to say the people who killed the notion of world peace.

Everyone has to want world peace for us to have it. Not everyone wants peace, but you can still have peace in your own life, regardless.
