ā€œMissing someone that weā€™re close to ā€“ because theyā€™ve had to go to another country, or are up in the north on a course, or went on a hiking trip with their friends ā€“ is such an unpleasant emotion, it feels peculiar to suggest that it is also, at a profound level, an extraordinary achievement and an important marker of emotional maturity. It is in no way simple for a prototypical adult to be able to miss anyone and we are often, almost without knowing it, engaged in complex manoeuvres to ensure that we resolutely wonā€™tā€¦ā€

I think the hardest part of being an adult is letting go of those who you love but that donā€™t love you back. Thatā€™s the key detail to who you should give your energy to.

It is insightful undoubtedly. The hardest part of being an adult perhaps is to miss someone knowing full well that he/she will never miss us in the same way. They do not care about us in the way we do about them. It is okay to feel numb at times... over time, one gets used to their absence and in the process starts healing.

Missing someone because of what used to be is key to healing. Sadly my best friend and partner, we could no longer see or hear one another. The hurt, mistrust and anger overtook our deep admiration for one another.

Iā€™ve been staring out of cafe windows and shed tears lately. I miss her. ā¤ once again, a beautiful offering to the rawness of human emotion! ā¤

I feel like its more a case of acceptng that you'll get to see them later after a while. Then when they pass away you get the missing part all over again.

Maturity is missing someone who will never miss you at all, and acceptance of that longing every day.

Thank you, I needed to hear this! Missing my husband right now. I have been alternating between feeling the agony and going numb, so hearing that itā€™s better and beautiful to allow myself to feel, even though it hurts so badly, is very healing ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

My current problem is the emptiness my depression developed. And as time goes by, I discover more and more problems that were created by my parents - and... I hate it. Their "independent approach" of raising me and my siblings really made us kinda distance people away from us, constantly testing them to assure they won't hurt us. But I know that by doing that...we're hurting them... And that's the saddest part for me...
