In the 1950's, I grew up with a little girl, who was born profoundly deaf, as her mother had the measles while pregnant. I almost died in grammar school from meningitis that I got from having the mumps. Later, as a young student nurse, I took care of patients in a hospital ward who were being kept alive in iron lungs after contracting polio. You will never convince me that vaccines are not important.

My grandmother died from measles at 43. She caught it from mum who was a child . A little boy in my class in the 60s died of encephalitis as a result of measles . I had it in the sixties as a small child. I remember feeling very ill and was thoroughly miserable from the hell of it. My son has a heart problem and in the seventies the pediatrician told me he didn't want him vaccinated against measles or whooping cough. I listened to his advice as he was the pediatrician and my son caught both these horrid diseases in his first school year. I gather the advice has now changed. Thank goodness.

Can you imagine if kids started getting paralyzed left and right in this country? Parents would be hysterical and panicking! But this was the reality of polio for so long. The fact that we had a polio-stricken president back when people with disabilities were still medically called "cripples" should tell you how common it was.

My grandmother who is 93 was a nurse in California and she would tell me about how the medical field was. She told me of going into the polio ward, before the vaccine, and having to take care of these children who were stuck in an iron lung. Kids as young as 12 now stuck in an iron case on a table for the rest of their lives. Her brother is scarred by surviving polio. It scares me that these diseases could come back.

I went to high school with a girl who worn hearing aids due to measles. No one knows what chicken pox is as well. I received the first Salk vaccine, a live attenuated polio virus on a sugar cube. We were glad to have that! As a (now retired) nurse, I have been vaccinated for everything and glad for it!

My uncle had polio and , to a lesser extent , so did my father. I remember growing up and not understanding why my father had such a strong aversion to white rooms, specifically white kitchens. Only later did I realize that it reminded him of what hospitals looked like in the very early 1900’s.

My Dad got measles as a child. He’s part of the silent generation. He went from perfect vision to coke bottle glasses for the rest of his life. Even now with glasses technology being so much better his glasses are Thick.
People just don’t talk to anybody who survived that stuff and how bad it could be.

It's like firing the janitor because "nothing is broken around here".
