So true. This is a doctor who genuinely cares about his patients and PRACTICES medicine in the right way. It’s not always a yes or no answer

He said it but I think people missed it. Medicine is a PRACTICE.

I think the problem with many of these claims is not that they’re wrong, is that they’re presented as the one magical truth

Well twice now patients have come in to my current workplace with cardiac alerts on their watches that have then been confirmed by EKG. We shouldn’t be too quick to disregard these technologies either, they’re improving it seems.

My doc says that these things ARE useful, if you use them right. They’re inaccurate, but they’re consistently inaccurate. So if you look at the trends, you will get good information from them.

"When I say real medicine, it's so imperfect and so shitty" We could apply that statement to all of real science, honestly. And I don't mean that as a "question everything" qanon type. I mean, good science and good medicine realize and accept the imperfections, and work to fix them over time through trial and error, controlled studies, etc.

My mom was having heart issues and the cardiologist recommended an apple watch since they couldn't capture the episodes in the office. Sure enough two days after getting one she brought the results in and he was able to give a diagnosis. They managed to capture it again on a proper EKG in the office while prepping for the surgery to confirm the diagnosis was correct

YESSS Thank yoooou Dr. Mike As a general physician myself, you truly put ice on the furry my fellows and I feel from these " perfect miracles". The saddest thing when debating these things with patients or others, they tend not to listen because they heard it from an "expert and it makes them think that their general knowledge is enough to have a confident "medical" opinion. Thats why physicians like you and your plateform are important truly.

My dad was playing in a pickleball tournament in Texas when a man in his 50s collapsed after his game from cardiac arrest. No one performed CPR or compressions on him because his Apple watch said his heart rate was normal. He died.

This is so true! My whole idea around health and medicine has changed after my own personal experience. People fall sick due to many different reasons. Instead of finding the root cause of our problems and the best possible solution for them, all we want to do is pop a pill or get a surgery or take an ice bath for that matter. Sometimes we are so desperate to just keep going on that we are okay with taking pills that have side effects and end up trading one disease for another. HEALTH AND WELLNESS IS HOLISTIC!!!

I have tachycardia and a watch that connects to an app on my phone. Nightly before midnight i take a screen shot of the collected cardiac data and then transfer it to a file on my computer so i can pass it on to my doctor...it can be done but it takes effort.

In my Apple Watch’s defense, it did catch my heart freaking out which turned out to be an undiagnosed hyperthyroid. I wouldn’t have gone to the doctor otherwise (& honestly I’m not sure if the doctor would have believed me if I did since it was fine in his office).

I had false alerts all the time from thsoe watches. It would randomly say "BPM 190" and then instantly drop back to 90bpm, id feel my heart sometimes and id be counting like 75-100bpm but the watcb would scream 190! One tkme it jumped to 220! Then i stopped wearing them. Having random anxiety attacks because youre watch thinks your heart is beating at 200bpm is not fun

ER doc: what brought you in today? My friend: my heart rate is 210. *points to her apple watch ER doc: no, no. Those things are usually wrong. Let's get you hooked up to our instruments.... hm.. they must be wrong too. It says 210 also. My friend: yah. Anyways, here's my bag of medications and my cardiologists phone number. You should have this now in case I black out. Annndddd got the paddles 20 min later.

My fitness tracker that tracks my HR being fast when I didn't really do anything, and my tiktok algorithm telling me being dizzy when standing up all the time isn't normal led me to getting a tilt table test, which was positive. Sometimes fitness trackers help, sometimes they won't.
