Fun fact: NYC crossing button are all completely disconnected from the lights. Every single lights operate on a timer and the crossing will light up irrespective if you press or even if there's nobody there. NYC simply didn't bother removing them because it would cost too much and letting people press it give them a feeling of control.

Honestly, never trust someone else to do the obvious. I had a job once where our massive warehouse water heater busted a leak, and I saw the boss and manager over there fiddling with it while I'm running around, madly squeegeeing the floors to keep the water away from the stacked product. After I've been doing this for a while, waiting for it to finish draining, I realize that the damn thing should have emptied itself by now, so I go over and check it myself. The boss and manager never bothered to turn off the water line, so it was just dumping water out the leak continuously instead of ever draining.
