Both times I tried to teach my son this lesson and took him to the doctor, he really was sick. Instead, I was taught a lesson in trusting my son.

When I was in high school my mom sewed but a needle broke off and fell in the carpet. She didn’t tell anyone that she couldn’t find it. I walk without shoes in the house and I felt pain in my heel. I had to walk to school and my foot started to swell, my mom would tell me I was faking to try and get out of school. I barely could walk, my mom would get angry that I was limping. I showed her my foot and you could tell it was swollen and began to change color. After a week of going to the school nurse she shut down her office and took me to the town clinic and called my dad to get permission for an X-ray. They found the needle buried in my foot touching my heel bone. By that time my foot color was bright red and I was running a fever. The doctor called my dad and my dad called my mom to pick me up. My mom saw the X-ray and tried to blame it on me saying I never told her because if I did she would take me to the dr. The nurse pulled out her notes she took when she spoke with my dad. She informed my mom that my dad said I told them both and my mom would tell my dad I was lying to get out of school or sympathy. My mom turned bright red and took me to the city ER. They had to do surgery to take it out and gave me antibiotics for an infection that set in. I wasn’t able to go to school for three weeks. I never wanted to get out of going to school, I would have rather been at school than home. When I had children I made sure I listened and took them seriously.

Not-so-fun story time when I was 14 I became scared I would attempt my life. I told my therapist because I thought she would take me to the hospital or have someone else. Instead, she had my mom do it. My mom told the entire place that I was faking because I had been grounded(in reality she took my phone and only escape from her abuse, her mother's abuse, and my reality that had caused me to attempt several times but never told anyone so I was genuinely afraid). Having learned my lesson from the therapist, when asked questions about my suicidal history by the old man and his condescending attitude, I evaded it(because I didnt want my mom, the source of my abuse to know). He told me I was faking it because I didn't cut myself and sent me home. So I started doing that. Later when I confided in a school counselor she called my mom. My mom demanded to see it and told me that if I did it again, she'd put me away somewhere. So I got better at hiding it and stopped telling people I needed help. I am better now, but I did it on my own. Don't do this to your kids.

Grade A parenting. Instead of solving a problem, waste everyone's time including your own creating even more of a problem 👏👏👏👏

If your kid is trying to get out of going to school, find out why before sending them back because something is wrong. Whether it's because they didn't do their homework (which you can find ways to help them get it done on time next time), they're being bullied/isolated (which is a serious issue that needs taxkling right away) or they get bored/agitated due to some underlying or possibly undiagnosed problem like ADHD (which you can employ methods to mitigate the negative effects of like medication, study aids, stim toys, etc)... there's always a reason they don't wanna go. It's the place they get to see their friends, be away from parents, classes can be enjoyable, etc etc Most kids don't mind going up til like High School, maybe Middle School. And even then, a lot of those causes for avoidance still apply.

My school was my house. I was homeschooled. My mom did let us get out of it if we were feeling badly, but we had to really be feeling badly. If we started to get up and run around, it was back to the books with us.

I work with kids. There is a good method in here that gets missused. The threat isn't the doctor's office. You don't want doctors to be something scary to a kid. The threat is an expert confirming their lie with no room to back out. They lose any and all argument when the wrath of god comes down on them. While on the other hand, you stop wasting time arguing with a kid that really needs to go to the doctor. The doctor's only job here is to prove or disprove the kid's story. The parent then can act on the confirmed info from there.

And even though the doctor played along with mommy, the kid didn't believe in the doctor's act and the kid still trusts the doctor, the trust he himself granted, probably knowing that doctors know what gun is.

So many parents in the world would rather intimidate and threaten their children rather than ask them why they hate school so much. But yeah, be another person they have no reason to trust, they'll put you in a nursing home when you need them to care 😒
