About 40 years ago I took a story writing class and one of the first things we were taught was not everyone will like or appreciate what you write, especially family members, so don't rely on their opinions necessarily and don't take it personally. I had kind of a hard time putting that into practice, but when I found an audience that did like and appreciate my work it was really inspiring. I found it was really okay that not everyone likes the same thing even though it would have been great if they did. I also learned to do it for me. Thanks for sharing this and I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas expanded.

WOW!
Thanks for the validation. I had a feeling that art wasn’t my real issue. Any more than my gardening is. Or any of my other “weird” interest…
I like your approach of explaining to family what the art means to me. It makes sense.
My version is explaining this isn’t about a career at all. I don’t want to ‘work’ as an artist. It’s all personal and just for me. I just make art because not only is it therapeutic, I crave it.
However, realistically I know I could and am going to have to repeat that over and over again, but it won’t make a difference.
It’s good thing I have hobbies like art and gardening to cope. 😂
Plus people like you who help in ways I can’t articulate.

Don't involve loved ones ever in this stuff. Don't hide, but don't share a a policy. It can only go badly, they will never understand, and will never say the right thing... Unless they are doing something in the same realm at the same level. Keep your creative life separate from loved ones to extend possible... it makes sense and will be understood and easier for all involved. my view.

They don't and won't understand. Recently, I was told my acrylic painting was nice. And then they brought a Felt-tip pen picture made by their eight years old granddaughter and told me it looks almost the same. That's not fair but never mind. I tried to explain them that she probably had the same fun as me... But they did not catch it at all🙂 They see my crafting as a waste of time and money.

I don't get much reaction from family 😂 I might get a "meh, its ok" but my son moved out and he keeps taking my watercolor paintings to hang at his place and dare I say it I've heard " I really like that one"
The thing I find funny is no one ever noticed or mentioned them at my place, yet they are hanging everywhere, but when my mom was alive and she would grab one she liked and hang it at her place everyone who came over would notice it and mention it.
The other thing is the ones I'm really proud of no one notices and the ones that were really easy people like them.
For example I was reading on Yayoi kusama, so I painted dots....both my son and another person want the painting..... it's Dots.....only dots.
I don't get it 😂⚫⚫⚪
Over the years I've had a few landscape paintings stolen and a nephew had a sketch of gargoyles tattooed around his arm so I like to think 🤔 some people like them.

"you have bigger issues than your art making". Wow 🎯
