Personally, I don't feel that Leonardo DeVinchi has particularly exceptional art. Plenty of artists of his time were experimenting with much more revolutionary concepts and in many cases, using much better materials that have lasted a lot longer.
That all being said, his public art and private sketches are very different things. It is a bit harsh to judge an artist based off their private sketches and claim they are "good" or "bad". Artists, (and synonymous for the time, anatomists) do studies of their subject of intrest. Especially when we are talking about the Renaissance era, this is an age of intellectual discovery, and is widely accepted as a revolutionary time for culture and science. His anatomical studies were not accurate for a variety of reasons, including the fact that dissection of a human body was considered an atrocious act. Often times, they would get bodies of people who were sick when alive, and already decomposing. Preservation methods were not really a thing. Hell, it was a really big discovery when the circulatory system was more accurately mapped, my pumping liquids into the veins.

You can't know what you can't know. I'd say he did pretty good. Most of modern science relies heavily on "assumptions" or inferences.... We find 3% of a dinosaur and infer the rest until we're wrong. All of humanity has used the known to find the unknown. This process is called learning.
