i think its important to note the reason its free. we (search and rescue) want people in genuine danger to not hesitate to hit the button. research shows thay when there is a charge, people will work hard to get themselves out and end up in a worse situation. that makes it harder for SAR and often ends in fatalities.

5 friends and I were rescued due to 24" of snow even though the forcast was clear and 70Ā°. Two lifted trucks and 6 people stranded in the mountains due to a 1 foot wide stream running under fresh snow. We got a phone charged and 2 hiked to the peak of a mountain. 6 hours later we called again and found out our group had already been rescued. That parent had to drive an hour away at 100 mph to visible confirm it wasn't us before they would send Search and rescue again. 30 hours later, SnR found us. The first snow plow blew its engine, and they sent a second one out for us causing the delay. We all got out safe, and the first group had no way of communication, so they may have died. We weren't charged a penny. 20 years later I still have the letter from SnR so my job would resend my no show termination. Good times.

I got pulled out of the Lake Superior Coastal Trail last summer after slamming my knee of a granite rock then pushing another 38 km to the point of failure! Essentially they contacted the Pukasawa National park and they responded with the helicopter! Only reason I didnā€™t get charged was the Canadian government was doing surveys of the park and the ranger said the fuel and driver were already paid for!

The high cost of typical emergency services often makes people try to help themselves on their own. This is a good thing garmin does. If you're in danger. Hit the button. Don't make the other half of SAR come carry you away in a body bag. (The other side is search and recovery.)

My SOS button pushed almost 100 times bouncing around in the back of the quad. It also canceled the SOS on its own. When I got back into service a couple hours later oblivious to what was happening there was alot of messages from the Police, Search and Rescue, Garmin and my wife...I didn't get any charges from Garmin but my wife charged me with being an absolute idiot šŸ˜…

Air ambulance has actually gotten exorbitantly more expensive in the last several years. Some savvy business people realized they could charge way more and utilize perks insurance, and it's been a nightmare for those who are not covered for the entire service.

If youā€™re worried about this, they offer extra insurance thatā€™s pretty cheap. Dan, how much did you have to pay when you were rescued? Did you press your SOS button?

It's due to "front country" rescue being privately owned and usually not covered under insurance. And they can charge what ever they want.

Hey Dan, please take another look into thisā€¦.you absolutely can be charged for a backcountry rescue. Gamin actually sells ā€œinsurance ā€œ to cover heli flights out of backcountry. I have it. I was not aware that this could happen until ā€œDixieā€ had to be evacuated from Idaho backcountry. She then received bill for evacuation, to the tune of about $50,000. Check her video out.

Here in Oregon, we had a horrible ice storm last winter. Some people went up into the mountains to look for someone that went missing weeks before. On their way home they hit a sheet of ice that slid them into the guard rail and they couldn't get out of it. They were able to send a $5 text through thier Garmin which led them and a car that crashed near them to get extracted. 7 people were pulled off the mountain. PS, both of the stuck cars were subarus. The only way I could get there was to have chains on my truck.

If a charity organisation responds and rescues you, thereā€™s no charge but you might wanna donate.

I was rescued by chopper once off the side of a mountain. I was stuck on a cliff and couldn't move an inch for several hours because the gravel around me was very loose and kept shifting. The helicopter was terrifying because as it was coming towards me, it was making me start to slip. I tried to wave them off, but they thought i was flagging them down. Luckily, i was able to grip into the sand hard enough to hold on while a man came down and grabbed me. I would've died that day if it weren't for them. I will always be grateful. Anyway, once i was safely out of the helo, the fire department informed me that if this had happened in Los Angeles County, I would have to pay about $10,000, but because it occurred in Kern County, it was free.

In New Zealand it is always free. We have networks of thousands of publically owned backcountry huts and trails for and they would rather people in trouble got the help They needed then worried if they could afford It.

Funny. In Europe the ambulance will either be free, or cheaper than a taxi šŸ˜‚

The charges vary. One person could not hike out 3 miles to a trsilhead because of heart problems. But they received a $ 60,000 bill. The NPS is debating charges, for years. And in New Hampshire, for a decade they have charged folks who just ignored blizzard warnings. While someone in the same spot with a twisted ankle may get evacced for free. So even with a Garmin, find out exactly what will be charged to evac you.

I think there's some conflation between the SOS button on your Garmin, which you're already paying for, it won't work if you're not subscribed, and the search and rescue resources.

I was rescued by a police helicopter and jet boat when i was a teenager. My cousin and I got lost during a family canoe trip. The helicopter located us using heat sensing cameras, and the jet boat retrieved us. We were both hypothermic when we made it to the ambulance. The rescue was funded by tax payers, but the ambulance was not. They did not end up taking us to the hospital because they determined we could be safely warmed up at home, so i don't think my parents ever got a bill for that either.
