I'm a small business owner myself, and I think what folks are referring to is that you need to charge hourly IN ADDITION to the charge for the result.
I'm a custom cake decorator, and I'm also a for-profit business. I sell the result as well, the wow factor of a fancy celebration cake. I'm also trying to build and run a business and eventually if I want to have a brick and mortart bakery I'll need to have employees and so an hourly wage is an essential part of building any small business. When I charge for a cake, I am absolutely selling my time as well as the final products. I charge for all of the ingredients, decor, packaging, supplies etc., then I charge for overhead costs like use of my own home utilities when I'm baking for a customer, wear and tear on the equipment I use, cost of a website and marketing etc and then I pay myself hourly for the time I spent baking and decorating. If I add all of that up and sell my cakes for that price, I would be running a nonprofit business. So, on top of the actual cost to create these cakes, I charge an additional 30% of that total cost, so I'm making a profit that I can use to grow my company. That is how you build a profitable business where you can employ not only yourself but others potentially down the road.

The way you've done business has enabled you to pay off your student loan, purchase properties, open a business and do things to bring joy to not only your customers, but to you
Let what you do continue to bring you satisfaction and happiness so it will never turn into a chore
Greed ruins many things

Also, as someone who has redone furniture myself, it depends where you live! I could charge $1000-$2000 for a piece of furniture in Seattle but here in Ohio it’s much lower. I have seen people create their own brands via social media and sell their stuff that way which seems to work well if they produce a good product.

It’s a piece of art to so you are not only selling for the time and material but the artful eye.
