It’s a piece of art to so you are not only selling for the time and material but the artful eye.

I completely agree. When I teach cooking classes, I generally get $200 per class (which is usually 1 hr). Depending on the prep and student involvement, the hrly rate changes. They are paying for your expertise, not just the product or the time.

I'm a small business owner myself, and I think what folks are referring to is that you need to charge hourly IN ADDITION to the charge for the result. I'm a custom cake decorator, and I'm also a for-profit business. I sell the result as well, the wow factor of a fancy celebration cake. I'm also trying to build and run a business and eventually if I want to have a brick and mortart bakery I'll need to have employees and so an hourly wage is an essential part of building any small business. When I charge for a cake, I am absolutely selling my time as well as the final products. I charge for all of the ingredients, decor, packaging, supplies etc., then I charge for overhead costs like use of my own home utilities when I'm baking for a customer, wear and tear on the equipment I use, cost of a website and marketing etc and then I pay myself hourly for the time I spent baking and decorating. If I add all of that up and sell my cakes for that price, I would be running a nonprofit business. So, on top of the actual cost to create these cakes, I charge an additional 30% of that total cost, so I'm making a profit that I can use to grow my company. That is how you build a profitable business where you can employ not only yourself but others potentially down the road.

I believe your pricing plan is exactly right! You need to stay competitive with your pricing! On the other hand, your skill is worth way more than $30/hour! It’s worth $100/hour, but if you charged that, people would not be able to afford you

Also, as someone who has redone furniture myself, it depends where you live! I could charge $1000-$2000 for a piece of furniture in Seattle but here in Ohio it’s much lower. I have seen people create their own brands via social media and sell their stuff that way which seems to work well if they produce a good product.

Do not care about what people say furniture itself is expensive, you actually do a great job, don’t feel ashamed the same people criticizing you are buy Gucci t-shirts that cost $10 to make in a 3rd world country for $300.
