It's not just education, or even mostly education - there are deeper issues at play here. First, thinking is hard. The brain consumes fully 30% of the bodies total energy. If the brain can get away with not thinking then it will, every time. In the past we had to think, at school, uni, work, wherever. And now we don't. Thinking is hard, and because we don't have to anymore... most of us don't. Period. Second, it's not cool to think any longer. Worse, it's actually uncool! Thinkers are viewed with, at least, suspicion, and at worst, open derision. People who espouse common-sense points of view, who use correct grammar, and who solve issues using logical analysis, are now largely viewed as the other. Thinking is uncool. The brain doesn't like to think. And people don't have to think... ergo, the observed societal trend towards maximal idiocy. And from what I can tell, there's still plenty of STUPID™ left in the barrel...
