imagine how bright it would be if you could see every single star and galaxy and everything else

To add to that, despite having these many stars, the universe can be accurately described as "empty" more than it is "full".

Technically, space isn’t black. The blackness of space is actually microwave light that’s very low frequency and very dim. Once this microwave background was visible- a visible orangish glow from every direction.

Also our eyes only see a tiny part of the light spectrum. After long distances, the light is red-shiftted and we cant see it

the fact that there is no atmosphere in the universe helps on that too, the light doesn't have enough material to disperse itself like in our atmosphere...

The night sky is black to our eyes, but it glows brightly in the microwave part of the spectrum (CMB)

Fun fact: some of the stars we see at night are just the remnants of once a living sun, their light travels in the expandng space for so long the actual star it's there anymore.
