Bordeaux ended 12th in Ligue 2 after just missing out on promotion back to L1 the previous season. Gérard Lopez inherited a disaster from over spending US owners but spent wildly to gamble to stay in L1 three seasons ago, including investing Euros 280k per month in Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic. They ended bottom, conceding a club record 98 goals. An Emperors Clothes story. It has now been stripped bare.

France does not look after its historic clubs. Clubs like Nancy and Sochaux have gone down to the third tier. Bordeaux are bigger than the two of them and should be one of the jewels in the crown of Ligue 1. Yes, they’ve been mismanaged clearly but the French system penalises clubs for financial difficulties when you’d hope they’d have more support and protection. Ligue 1 is already viewed as a farmers league (I hate that expression) but when only PSG are allowed to thrive, where’s the competition? Bordeaux, Marseille, St Etienne, Nantes. Huge clubs that need safeguarding. It would be great to see Ligue 1 competitive again.
