Different story when it comes to family though. I run around the planet for them but when I'm struggling, all they can say is "figure it out" or "work harder".

Probably even more than it being a cause for unhappiness it's a symptom. If you are focused on positive things and actively striving to achieve things that make you happy then you will be happy to see someone else achieve something. That's a positive thing to you. If you are focused on all the bad things in your life and on externalising blame for that (to specific people or just generally the universe hating you) then your reaction will be negative. All reactions are selfish. The difference is whether you relate to it with the positive context of a goal you are striving for and looking forward to or the negative context of everything you don't have and the anger about that.
And that can be a super good clue when a friend is starting to struggle. If they used to celebrate your wins and now seem to struggle to do that then that's your sign that their emotional resilience is grinding down and they could probably use some support.

Why are you imagining someone not celebrating your success as that person criticizing or hating you? Why do you feel a need to live in their head? Maybe that person has other things in their life distracting them from acknowledging you. Let them deal with their own issues and stop projecting that onto yourself.
