With no computer analysis. This guy lived and breathed chess

Fisher's giant face at the beginning jumpscared me.

And not to mention he totally threw away one game and blundered away an other one with a very uncharacteristic-blunder, but also has to be said how much Boris Spasky was a true gentleman, because he could have simply claimed the title when Fischer just refused continuing the match in the beginning, making all kinds of crazy demands. So kudos to both men, in their own ways I would say 👏

I certainly can use a daily reminder of just how strong a player Bobby Fischer was.

Nobody had an aura like Fischer. He was a true genius that the game has yet to see again. Magnus is special but Fischer was just built different

Bobby and Morphy are the two best IMO, during their peaks they were so far ahead of their contemporaries.

Only a 1 time world champion but his dominance was unparalleled in the history of chess

Fischers's last ELO rating was 2785, 125 points ahead of no 2, Spassky. No one has ever come close to such a lead. Adjusting for ELO inflation, such a grade today would be between 2920 and 2950, making him the strongest player of all time.

And during that run Bobby played in two strong blitz tournaments as well, with Herceq Novi being one of the strongest ever held with a score of 19/22, 4 an half points ahead of Tal which he beat twice an took first place, and he beat the Russians that palyed in it 8½/1½, with Korchnoi being the only one to beat him as Bobby beat him as well with the two games they played against each other in the tournament. Then like 7 or 8 months later in Manhattan blitz tournament, Bobby scored 21½/22. So two strong blitz tournaments which he crushed and a 20 game winning streak as well on his way to the world championship, I think Taminov was right, Bobby was a machine.

Fischer was way ahead of his competition , more than any other champion. Also he was facing LEGENDS like Spassky , Tal , Petrosian , Taimanov , Benko , Larsen and so on... Non of the other great players had that level of competition.

The pre-engine era was awesome. Players had to think a lot, and use tricks. Nowadays it's all (more of) engine and book theory, except for Fisher Random gameplay. That's the reason people even now watch Tal games for his brilliance.

He was so strong I actually was surprised that Petrosian won a game or two against Fischer in 1971. Shows how insanely strong Petrosian was too

If I'm not mistaken Fischer's Stockfish 15 accuracy is 70% during his 70-72 stints, the highest ever (except Niemann probably)

If a player had results like that today, they'd be accused of being an engine. Truly phenomenal

Fischer didn't just beat Spassky, he beat the russian chess machine. I don't know how matches are played now, but when Fischer played for world champion, the games could be paused over night. Both players were allowed to record the chess position and could spend the night analyzing the game and planning for the next day's resumption of the game. And that's what Fischer did. Alone. But there was no one around at that time sufficiently versed in chess that could provide him any assistance. Spassky, on the other hand, had his entire entourage of a couple dozen (as I recall) grandmasters that reviewed the position long into the morning while Spassky himself got some rest and looked at their results when he awoke. And still Bobby Fischer beat Spassky for world chess champion. Another item. After his success, Fischer disappeared completely. I don't think anyone really knows why. They kept wondering if he was going to appear to defend his title. But he never did. And so I wondered about this. Why would Bobby Fischer, who really loved and lived chess, disappear? At that time, the world chess championship took place every three years. He would have won again had he played. And he might have held onto the title for a couple decades. Who knows? He was so far beyong every other player in the world. He went up against and defeated the Spassky's entourage, the russian chess machine, all by himself. So why would he so completely disappear? I am mesmerized by the mysterious nature of his disappearance, and I have thought about what or who could have convinced him to disappear. The KGB. I think the russians were quite upset, having retained the world chess champion title for so long, that they warned or threatened him never to play again on pain of death. Maybe they told him to go into hiding. Maybe they imprisoned him somewhere to ensure he couldn't play. As far as I know, when he finally came out of hiding, he never said anything to anyone where he was during those 20+ years. I think he was in Camodia or Vietnam or one of those smaller asian nations when he emerged. So what could have made him go into hiding and not ever talk about it?

Easily the best player that lived in the non-engine era.
