Kaladin was a very well-written character who suffered from depression. Best wishes to your son.

Your son is very lucky to have such a caring and understanding family for support. Just another reason to love the Sanderson’s

Wow I’m honestly shocked that Sanderson doesn’t struggle with mental health, with how well he portrayed Kaladin, and several characters in his books. But as an often depressed guy, getting the support from parents, the hugs instead of the “why aren’t you doing better by now,” that makes a world of difference.

I'm a Children's Social Worker. My job is to support kids with mental health struggles and their families. Regardless of the type of mental health struggle, I think one common thing that helps is a sense of community. Being around peers who have similar struggles and have shown themselves to be resilient makes a difference. Whatever that community looks like (church youth group, support group, therapy) knowing we're not alone in our struggles and other have been through it and come out the other side stronger is critical for transforming struggling kids into resilient and confident adults. Sincerest best wishes to your son and your family.

You gave him a hug instead of, yelling, telling him to just deal with it, mocking, scaring, or belittling him. You're doing good.

I have bipolar, and my wife never really got it fully. She understood that there was something wrong, but it wasn’t until she went through a stent of depression this last year that she got a first hand hint of it. I comforted her and supported her the best I could. I took up the slack in our home that she couldn’t carry. It was weird to be on the other end of it. We’ve been married for 27 years. Before I was medicated in my early and mid twenties I put her through hell, but she stuck with me anyway. I will always think highly of her for that.

Brandon, as someone who has struggled all their life with mental illness, you are doing exactly what you need to. Just being there does so much, even if nothing is being said. Just not being alone. And having someone there for when you are ready to talk and ask for something, it means the world.

When someone is struggling with something like this the only things you can do is make sure professional treatment is available to them and just be there without expectations or advice. You can’t get someone else out of that hole. But you can sit by the hole so they aren’t alone. Your physical presence is the most helpful thing you can do.

This is what my mom says. I have OCD and my brain is not kind to me at all. She says she feels helpless when I am in mental distress.

Brandon, I don't know if you remember me. We met briefly at LTUE and I told you that Kaladin is why I can feel... really anything at all anymore. Kaladin and Syl saved my life. I have two kids now, and third being born in about a month. You're amazing, and have made a huge difference in the world.

Giving him a hug sometimes all you can do. It can't always be solved.

My dad is an old-school workaholic. He often asks me to help him on the weekends to fix this and that. I struggle with severe depression and yesterday, I cried for the first time in a long time when I realized my dad was starting to show understanding and care towards my mental health struggles. He asks me now if I am okay and if I am willing to help, which is something he didn't used to do. Comes to show how even the unlikeliest people can change. Not saying he's a bad dad. He is awesome. But he did struggle for a long time to understand that not everyone has the same mentality as he does.

Honestly when I'm struggling with mental health, my biggest fear in sharing it is being judged or being a burden on other people, so even the thought of just getting a hug and asking if there's anything you can do to help is EXTREMELY impactful. Thank you for all of the time and effort you have put into studying mental health conditions and portraying them in your books. They have helped me personally and I'm incredibly grateful. <3

I struggled with mental health issues for many years. The things you said are "all you can do" are actually very powerful. A hug, listening, asking if there is anything you can do, are all perfect. That doesn't mean this will "cure" him. Recovery is multifaceted, there isn't one thing that will make all of this better. For me it was a combination of years of therapy, and addressing some important points that I didn't know where bothering me, finding the right antidepressant, and two "experimental" depression treatments, all of which gave me a spark of hope that things can get better, which I then held onto to make meaningful changes in my life. The hope was a prerequisite, as until that spark occurred, part of me did not want to help myself as I thought I was helpless. The meaningful changes were serendipitous as timings of opportunities lined up with this spark. I was very lucky. Not everyone will follow this path, but I just want you to know it is possible.

as someone with depression.. a lot of the time, the only thing that keeps me around is the thought that my parents will always hug me even if they don’t fully understand what I’m feeling. keep helping however you can! it’s never futile.

As someone who also struggles with mental health, sometimes a hug can heal more than any medicine. Just having someone there with you trying to help is already huge.

To sit in the dark with someone who is unable to feel joy and not try to fix it is just about the hardest thing a parent or loved one can do. Much appreciated from a big fan

Brandon Sanderson is a really good dad. His empathy and love for his children comes across really strong in his characters and he sets an amazing example for parents of mentally ill kids.
