Also worth noting: Fitness influencers aren't going to push walking - it doesn't make them money. They want you joining their gyms and buying the programs (or supplements).

Walking is also a very accessible activity for people (no equipment needed) and is a great gateway activity to building up to other forms of physical exercise.

She reminds me of a teacher my child had. "Horseback riding isn't a sport" and "ballet isn't exercise." We challenged him to ride a horse for thirty minutes. He didn't last ten and never berated my child for not playing soccer again.

Walking is the only form of exercise for me that doesn't trigger an eating disorder. By walking alone, no change in diet, I lost 15 pounds and have maintained that for about a year and have not felt any need to heavily restrict caloric intake.

I think it's a major "you can't sit with us" moment. Some people just want to feel better than others and to achieve that, they choose something restrictive. They restrict their diet in a specific way or they play into the latest fitness trend or whatever. Diet and fitness trends are yachts and lake houses of the poor people :D well, not actually poor poor, cause poor people actually struggle, but us mids are comfortable enough to create our own problems.

I'm autistic and one of the stims I developed is walking back and forth in place, and I end up walking 7-15 miles most days. People are always shocked that I'm as strong and "in shape" as I am considering that walking is all I do and every other adult in my family is considered obese. It's definitely exercise.

I watched that original video too and as a personal trainer that level of misinformation was absolutely maddening! I think that discounting walking as exercise is just downright dangerous

Walking is a low-intensity cardio that has study-proven health benefits. It is a very good type of exercise for most people, accessible and non-traumatic. Intensity can be easily changed by increasing speed, duration, or walking uphill. That being said, if you can afford the time and effort, it is a good idea to add strength or resistance training according to your fitness level. Even 10 minutes a few times a week can yield significant benefits.

I have committed myself to 10k step count! It’s amazing how much better I feel about ALL facets of life; energy, happiness, less anxiety, boosted confidence, the list goes on. Whoever said this probably just doesn’t have a healthy mindset with fitness in general. It used to bother me people like that but now I feel sorry for them to be caught up in a healthy mindset. ❤

I gained a crazy amount of weight during pregnancy and started walking 10,000 steps 3 days a week and now doing it 5 days a week. My muscles are sore and I've lost 6 lbs. It is definitely an exercise especially when there are hills and your walking as fast.

I am 55 and a year ago I started walking 5 miles a day. I am the fittest I have ever been and weigh what I weighed in high school. I wasn’t over weight to start out and was not trying to lose 10 pounds- I was doing it to stay fit.

Thanks for this! It can be disheartening seeing people talk about walking in a negative light and hurts motivation to do so. So good to hear it's legit

I walk almost every day as part of my commute via public transportation, plus on my job. At least once on the weekend I’ll do an hourlong walk. To me, this is easy, cheap exercise. No driving, no gym membership, just me and a pair of sneakers. I also swim and lift weights, but walking is foundational. On an average day, I can log anywhere from 7K to 20K steps. It really says something that during the 18 months of lockdown, I gained 25 pounds and lost all of it within 6-8 months of resuming my commute.

Cardio is underrated. Walking is my favorite exercise. Running and walking actually burn the same amount as calories when you do the same distance
