Why are bicycles stable? The most common answer is gyroscopic effects, but this is not right.

Bicycles evolved to steer themselves and stay upright. Bicycles that didn't keep themselves upright did not survive.

I used to freak out taking a heavy dirt bike down wild rutted hills. My mate said, just relax. Ever seen a bike ride itself down the hill after the rider fell off, just loosen your grip and it will do the work. He was right.

WOW the first shot of the bike riding down the hill sent me right back to my childhood... In hindsight, I didn't take very good care of my first bike LOL

Yes wheel caster is the reason for self correction but it still needs the gyroscopic force...or it would stay upright without moving

I was always terrified to let go of both handles, because I thought the bar would just flip over and I'd immediately fall. Until I learned this concept. Now I can confidently ride hands free and even go around corners, while feeling fairly safe.

In the mountain biking world, this measurement is the offset between the steering axis and the front contact point, called “trail”

Ever wonder why the steering wheel of a car can self center? Actually, cars can also utilise this effect by having the front wheel's pivot-point slightly tilted forward.

Gonna have a random bike just rolling through a town nonstop as a running gag in a show one day.

In Rajasthan, India, there's a village where an old cruiser bike (Royal Enfield) is worshipped as people think there was a spirit riding that bike. The story was that the bike was seen traveling straight without a driver for a few miles on a long stretched road. I wish they watched this video🤣🤣

Bringing back childhood memories of me and my neighbor "ghost riding" our bikes down a huge hill when we were bored 😂

My dad tried to teach me to ride a bike when I was a kid. I kept failing. He was patient but after about 2 or 3 hours he said I should rest and try again when I'm less nervous. I got annoyed at that because I thought he didn't believe in me so I took the bike out myself and went to practice. I kept failing and falling, A LOT. Eventually I stopped being afraid of falling and accepted that if I fall I'll just have to deal with the pain, and suddenly I was riding just fine. I realised that the best way to ride a bike is to have as little control over the bike's natural movement as you possibly can. I was so afraid of falling that I didn't trust that I wouldn't if I just stopped being so scared.

I have seen this video or this portion of the video from you so many times and I always forget this is how bikes work. I hope this time I will remember because it's really interesting

True, but if you roll a single bicycle wheel down a hill it stayes up right too, so gyroscopics is part of the equation
