When the inventor of peanut butter was the ONLY thing they ever talked about during Black History month, even in a "progessive" area's school - that's racist. (This was during the peak of "Political Correct-ness" - despite having us do 'pilgrim and Indian' cosplays with construction paper headbands for Thanksgiving.)
While perhaps not as disturbingly dystopian (or blantantly so) as what's happening today, the 90's were extremely weird.
