I was taught to use orange or red to darken yellow without losing vibrancy. Shading with brown would definitely help with more muted colors

This is a great reason to be conservative with use of black as a generic value control measure. Yellow is a challenging color to manage, in part because its complement (violet) is so much darker, compared to other complementary pairs like red/green. Yellow is also the most easily identifiable color at a distance, so our perception is especially sensitive to this color. Thanks for this quick tip!

The reason black doesn’t work is because most black paint is actually just a very dark blue, as that pigment is easier to produce, but since the yellow is so light, it makes it a lot more obvious.

Tip: To darken colors you can use the opposite color of the color your trying to darken on the color wheel print a color wheel out so you can always know.

Its because lots of black art materials usually go with browns and blues to make a super dark pigment. Can easilh see this in crayola

Great content! Another good one is using blue to darken colors on a cool palette and using dark red or brown for a warmer palette :)
