Last line is important - be careful how you pack it. My wife brought back a bottle of rum via checked luggage from Jamaica (poorly wrapped in a duffel bag, no less) and going through an airport (MIA) not known for being gentle with luggage. Simply put, it was leaving a trail of rum from when we picked it up at customs as she rolled it.

There are many transport options. I personally use a Vin Valise but it’s $400. There are reusable wine cartons advisable for under $100. There are also these inflatable pouches that come with their own plastic syringe like pump which are very good in protection for a limited quantity. I think they are about $10-$20 for a pack of 15-30.

We attended a destination wedding where our lovely hosts gave the out-of-town guests each a very nice canvas tote bag full of drinks, snacks and local treats, including a bottle of wine and a jar of local honey. With all of the other pre and post-wedding activities and hospitality that they lavished on us, my husband & I weren't likely to be able to finish the wine or honey in the weekend before we had to fly home. Using cardboard bottle dividers from a liquor store and tape borrowed from the hotel's front desk, I was able to pad the glass containers and then pack them in my rolling bag, which I then checked. I used the canvas tote as my carry-on but then I got flagged at security screening when the guard spotted a corkscrew at the bottom of a pocket in the tote that I hadn't thoroughly searched. We have plenty of corkscrews at home so I was happy to just toss it out before having my new bag rescanned.

I have special bottle cartons with foam in it. When I travel with my family to California I put 2 cartons in each baggage, so I can buy 6 bottles of Californian wine and put it in my checked baggage. But I have always in each baggage a big beach towel, if I do not have the bottle cartons with me than I can still wrap a bottle in the big beach towel and still the bottle of wine will be safe arriving in my home country.
